Over the Christmas break a friend (from England) asked about "Curriculum for Wales" (via email) and I thought it might be helpful to share my response in the form of a blog post.

The curriculum for Wales is the national curriculum for schools in Wales. It outlines the knowledge, skills, and experiences that students should be provided with during their time in school, and it is used as the basis for planning and delivering education in Wales. The curriculum is designed to be flexible and responsive to the needs of individual students and schools, and it is intended to provide a broad and balanced education that prepares students for life and work in the 21st century.

Curriculum for Wales AOLEs

The curriculum for Wales is organized into six areas of learning:

  1. Expressive arts
  2. Health and well-being
  3. Humanities
  4. Languages, literacy, and communication
  5. Mathematics and numeracy
  6. Science and technology

Each of these areas of learning is further divided into learning objectives, which outline the specific knowledge, skills, and experiences that students should be provided with at each stage of their education. The curriculum is structured so that students build on their knowledge and skills as they progress through school, and it is designed to be inclusive and accessible to all students, regardless of their ability or background.

One of the main goals of the curriculum for Wales is to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences they need to be successful in the 21st century. This includes the development of critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently and collaboratively. The curriculum also aims to promote the values of respect, responsibility, and resilience, and it encourages students to be curious, creative, and open-minded.

The curriculum for Wales is also designed to be flexible and responsive to the needs of individual students and schools. It is based on the principles of personalization and choice, which allow students to tailor their learning to their own interests and needs. This means that students are able to choose from a range of learning experiences and activities, and they are encouraged to take an active role in their own learning.

Overall, the curriculum for Wales is a comprehensive and flexible framework that is designed to provide students with a broad and balanced education that prepares them for life and work in the 21st century. It is based on the principles of personalization and choice, and it aims to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences they need to be successful in the 21st century.
